Light Box Levels Up! +5 Skill Points
Are you into light boxes and macro photography? If so, read on; otherwise, you might want to skip this part.
We’ve recently upped our game in product photography, focusing particularly on improving our light box setup. Here’s how we did it:
We opted for a portable light box, not for its portability but for its size and features, which were more suitable for our needs than many non-portable options. The key feature? It’s equipped with 480 LEDs, making it one of the brightest light boxes available. This brightness has been crucial for our photography needs.

Adding a Grid for Perfect Measurements
To add to our shots, we incorporated an Omnigrid 15×15 Grid mat, perfectly fitting the interior dimensions of our light box. This grid allows for buyers to see measurements quickly in photos without extra steps.

Enhancing the Backdrop
Initially, I considered adding another Omnigrid for the back, but I found a more versatile solution: a magnetic bulletin board. This not only serves as a backdrop but also allows for the use of magnets to hold paper items flat, which can be tricky with curled or folded materials. Some individuals may prefer a second Omnigrid instead.

Additional DIY Enhancements:
Light Control: I draped a lightweight, dark blanket over the top of the light box, letting it fall over the front to control light glare. This replaced the standard front cover which I found less useful for my needs.
Height Indicator: I also crafted a laser-engraved board for the back of the light box. This board helps display the height of taller items. While this might not be feasible for everyone, it’s a great addition if you have the tools or access to custom engraving services. I take it out when using the magnet board.
